Courtesy Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York Philip-Lorca diCorcia A STORYBOOK LIFE 18 september – 12 december Den amerikanske fotografen Philip Lorca diCorcia har en betydelsefull roll i samtida fotografi. Han blandar dokumentär tradition med fiktion, film- och reklamfoto till ett alldeles eget uttryck. Under Xposeptember visas tre serier fotografier. Utställningens huvuddel är A Storybook Life, 76 bilder tagna under 25 år, sammanställda 2003. De sitter i en följd, tätt på väggen, likt scener ur en film eller sidor i en bok. Utställningen innehåller också den nya serien Two hours. Den är tagen från en bestämd position på en gata i Havanna, Cuba, där diCorcia under två timmar låtit omgivningen bli kuliss för det som utspelar sig. Från en av diCorcias mest kända serier Heads, finns sju verk. Heads porträtterar förbipasserande på gatan. Belysningen är arrangerad men personerna är omedvetna om diCorcias närvaro – spontanitet och iscensättning kombineras. Utställningen A Storybook Life är producerad av Whitechapel Art Gallery, London och Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall i samarbete med Centre national de la photographie, Paris, Folkwang Museum, Essen, Centro de Arte de Salamanca och Centro de Artes Visuais, Coimbra. The American photographer Philip Lorca diCorcia occupies an important role in contemporary photography. In his work documentary tradition mixes with fiction, film and advertising photography to a very characteristic expression. During Xposeptember three of his series will be on display. The core of the exhibition is A Storybook Life, 76 photographs taken over the course of 25 years. They are mounted on the wall tight against one another, like scenes from a film or pages from a book. The exhibition also includes the new series Two hours, photographs taken from a fixed position on a street in Havana, Cuba, where diCorcia for two hours allowed the surroundings to become a stage set for what was happening. The exhibition includes as well seven works from one of diCorcia’s best-known series Heads, which consists of portraits of passersby on the street. Although the lighting has been arranged, the people in the photographs are not aware of diCorcia’s presence – spontaneity and theatricality are combined.
