Unga fotografer från Art+Commerce i New York 24 EMERGING PHOTOGRAPHERS 14 september–18 oktober
The New Yorker; Jason Fulford, fotograf and co-grundare, J & L Books; Josette Lata, art buyer, J. Walter Thompson; Lawrence Luhring, co-director, Luhring Augustine Gallery; Lesley Martin, executive editor, Aperture books program; Steven Meisel, fotograf; Jack Pierson, fotograf; Stephen Shore, fotograf. The festival begun in 2004 to encourage the recognition of the diverse and talented photographers based in the New York area, whose work has not yet been appreciated by traditional print and exhibition venues. In 2005, The Art+Commerce festival invited photographers not represented by a gallery or an agent for assignment to submit an on-line portfolio of their work. Upon an open call for entries in the spring of 2005, over 1100 photographers submitted their work. The submission were reviewed by members of Art+Commerce and an esteemed jury made up of distinguished professionals, including photographers, editors, book publishers and gallery owners. This year’s jury was: Fabien Baron, art director and founder, Baron & Baron; Melissa Bent and Mirabelle Marden, co-directors, Rivington Arms; Elisabeth Biondi, visual editor, The New Yorker; Jason Fulford, photographer and co-founder, J & L Books; Josette Lata, art buyer, J. Walter Thompson; Lawrence Luhring, co-director, Luhring Augustine Gallery; Lesley Martin, executive editor, Aperture books program; Steven Meisel, photographer; Jack Pierson, photographer; Stephen Shore, photographer. Approximately 3000 people attended the popular opening night event at The Tobacco Warehouse, a 2300 square meters space, just north of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. During the New York showing, thousands more came not only from the neighborhood and the local regions, but also industry professionals from around the world. Through such exposure and support, many of the photographers started professional relationships with gallery directors, collectors, magazine editors and agents. Before coming to Stockholm the exhibition has toured to Tokyo, Milan and Madrid (se www.artandcommerce.com for further details). The 2005 Festival of Emerging Photographers is accompanied by PEEK – a 172-page book that includes 150 color images, and introductory essay, biographies of the 24 artists included in this years’ festival and a discussion with jurors and artists.
